Balayage & Ombré
Hand-painted dimension that grows out like real life.
About this service
Balayage is the art of hand-painting lightener onto hair to create soft, natural-looking dimension. Unlike traditional foil highlights, balayage has no harsh root line — which is exactly why it’s the most-requested color service at Love Thy Barber.
Sammy paints each piece freehand based on your face shape, where the light naturally hits your hair, and the lived-in feel you’re after. The result is sun-kissed dimension that grows out gracefully — no obvious regrowth line, no panic between appointments.
Who it’s for
Clients who want low-maintenance dimension, a “my hair just looks like this” aesthetic, or a softer alternative to traditional highlights. Works beautifully on brunettes, blondes, and natural reds alike.
What to expect
- 1
Vision Consultation
We pull inspo photos, talk grow-out goals, and decide between balayage, ombré, foilayage, or a hybrid based on your starting tone.
- 2
Hand-Painting
Sammy paints each piece freehand with lightener and bond-builder, varying saturation from root to tip for that lit-from-within finish.
- 3
Process & Gloss
Open-air or wrapped processing, then a custom-mixed gloss to land on your exact dream tone — buttery, ashy, honey, copper, or bright blonde.
- 4
Cut & Style
Optional shape refresh, bond-repair mask, and a finishing blowout that shows off every painted piece.
How long it lasts
Most balayage clients rebook every 12–16 weeks for a maintenance paint, with a gloss-only visit every 6–8 weeks to keep tone fresh and shiny.
Aftercare
- ✓Use sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and a weekly bond-repair mask.
- ✓Wash 2–3 times a week, not daily — balayage loves a little oil.
- ✓Use a purple shampoo or gloss-toning mask if you went buttery or icy.
- ✓Always heat-protect — painted ends are slightly more porous.
Common questions
How is balayage different from highlights?+
Highlights are placed with foils starting at the root for full saturation. Balayage is hand-painted, usually starting below the root, so there is no harsh regrowth line and the look grows out softly over months.
Will my balayage look brassy?+
Not when it is toned correctly. Every Love Thy Barber balayage finishes with a custom-mixed gloss to land on the exact tone you want, and we will give you a take-home toning shampoo or mask to keep it there.
How long does a balayage appointment take?+
Plan for 2–3 hours from start to finish, including the gloss and blowout. Very long or very dark hair going significantly lighter can run longer; we will set expectations during the consultation.
