What to Bring (and What NOT to Bring) to Your Balayage Appointment

March 18, 2026 · 4 min read

A 3-hour appointment is part chair time, part Netflix break. Here is exactly what to bring (and what to leave at home).

What to bring

  1. Inspo photos (3–5). Pull from Pinterest or Instagram. Show what you LIKE and what you DON'T like — both are useful.
  2. A snack. A 3-hour appointment plus a low blood-sugar consultation is no fun for anyone. Granola bar, protein drink, banana — quick + non-messy.
  3. A water bottle. Color processing dries you out faster than you'd think.
  4. Headphones + downloaded content. Salons have wi-fi but it can drop. Bring a downloaded show or podcast for the wait while color processes.
  5. A button-up or zip-up shirt. The cape covers most of you, but you will avoid pulling a t-shirt over a wet, freshly toned head.
  6. Honest expectations. Balayage is hand-painted — no two paintings are identical. Bring an open mind alongside the inspo photos.

What NOT to bring

  1. Pre-washed hair. Day-old hair holds color better. Do not shampoo right before your appointment.
  2. A tight ponytail. Pull marks from a tight band can show up as uneven painted lines. Loose hair preferred.
  3. Strong perfume. You'll be sitting close to your stylist for hours; a heavy scent in a small studio gets old fast.
  4. Unrealistic deadlines. If you're going from black to platinum, no single appointment will get you there safely. Trust the process.

Day-of timeline (what 3 hours actually looks like)

  1. 0:00–0:15 — Consultation, photos, strand test, mix the formula.
  2. 0:15–1:00 — Hand-paint sections one by one (the part where you watch a show).
  3. 1:00–2:00 — Process under heat or open air with foils as needed.
  4. 2:00–2:30 — Wash, tone, deep-condition.
  5. 2:30–3:00 — Cut shape refresh + finishing blowout.

FAQs

Should I tip on a balayage?+

15–20% is standard in Salt Lake County; 20% is appreciated for very long appointments where the stylist is on their feet for 3 hours. Cash or card both work.

What if I don't love the result?+

Speak up before you leave the chair. Toner, gloss, and small adjustments are easy in the moment and almost free; calling 3 days later about the tone is a much bigger lift. Sammy will always invite an honest mid-appointment check-in.

How long does a first-time balayage appointment take?+

Plan for 3 hours start to finish; longer if your hair is below the shoulder or significantly darker than your goal.
