Most stylists cut curly hair the same way they cut straight hair, then 'see' the shape later. The result is always wrong. Here's how to spot one who actually knows curls.
If you have curly hair and you've ever walked out of a salon thinking 'I love it now... but I have no idea what it'll do tomorrow' — you went to a stylist who cuts curly hair like it's straight hair.
The cardinal rule of curly hair
Curls have to be cut where they live, not where they fall when wet. A curl that pops to the chin when dry is shoulder-length wet — cut it wet and even, and you end up with a chin-grazing front and a shoulder-grazing back. That is not how the curl actually behaves.
Real curly cuts are dry, curl-by-curl. Each curl is shaped individually. The result is a head of curls that fall the way they actually fall, not a wet-cut shape that disappears the moment you stop holding the cape.
Five questions to ask a stylist before booking
- 'Do you cut curly hair dry?' — If they hesitate, walk away. The answer should be confident yes.
- 'Do you do a porosity test?' — Curl porosity (low/medium/high) determines product, color readiness, and how curls will react to chemistry. A real curly stylist tests this.
- 'What products do you finish with on curls?' — They should name 2–3 brands made for curls (DevaCurl, Innersense, Bumble & Bumble curl line, etc.) — not generic mousse.
- 'Will you flat-iron my hair to see the shape?' — They should NOT. A flat-iron blowout flattens the curl pattern and makes the cut wrong. Real curly stylists don't do this.
- 'Can I see your curl portfolio?' — Their Instagram should have at least 5+ recent curly clients in different curl types.
How Love Thy Barber handles curls
Sammy cuts curly hair dry, curl by curl, with point-cutting and razor-cutting based on curl type and porosity. No flat-iron blowouts to "see the shape." For chemistry on curls (color, balayage, even Brazilian Blowouts), Sammy uses bond-builders specifically formulated for curl integrity.

How is a curl-by-curl cut different from a regular cut?+
A curl-by-curl cut is done on dry, fully-defined curls. Each curl is shaped where it actually lives. A regular cut is done on wet hair where curls are stretched out — the result looks great wet and rarely looks how the client wanted dry.
Should I come in with my hair washed or unwashed?+
Day-old hair, fully defined and styled the way you normally wear it. That way Sammy can see how your curls actually behave.
How long does a curly cut take?+
Plan for 75–90 minutes for a first-time curl-by-curl cut, including porosity assessment and finishing styling. Maintenance cuts are 60 minutes.
