A 15-minute consultation can save you a $300 color correction. Here is exactly when to book a consult instead of jumping straight to the service.
I get this DM about three times a week: "Do I really need a consultation, or can I just book the color appointment?"
My honest answer: most of the time, you can book the service directly. Some of the time, a 15-minute consultation will save you a $300 color correction. Here is exactly how to tell which camp you are in.
When you can skip the consultation
Book the service directly when:
- You are returning to a stylist you have already worked with — they have your notes.
- You want a simple trim, men's cut, or beard trim with no major change in shape or length.
- You are getting a root touch-up in the same shade you have been using.
- You are getting a fade you have had before — same guard, same length, same edge-up.
When the consultation is worth it
Book the free consult first when:
- You are changing your color by more than two shades, especially going darker-to-lighter.
- You have box-dye, henna, or a previous salon color that needs correcting.
- You are switching from highlights to balayage (or vice versa) — these are very different techniques.
- You have never worked with this stylist and you want a sharper hair-shape change (pixie cut, bob, big chop).
- You are planning bridal hair, prom, or a major event and want trial timing locked in.
- You have hair texture, scalp, or chemistry concerns that a salon needs to know up front.
What actually happens in a 15-minute consult
A consultation at Love Thy Barber is not a sales pitch. It is 15 minutes of looking at your hair, listening to what you want, and answering three questions:
- Is what you want achievable on this hair in one appointment?
- If not — what is the realistic multi-visit plan?
- What does it cost, how long does it take, and when can we start?
You leave with a plan, a cost estimate, and a calendar slot. There is no obligation to book that day.
Why "skipping the consult" costs people money
About one in eight new color clients arrives with a previous color outcome that needs correcting before we can do what they want. Without a consult, that becomes a 30-minute conversation at the chair on appointment day — which means either we cut the appointment short, you leave without the result you wanted, or both.
How to book the consultation
At Love Thy Barber, the free consult is bookable online — in-studio or by 10-minute phone call, you choose. No deposit. No commitment. Just answers.
If you are not sure which camp you are in, default to the consultation. The worst outcome is you spend 15 minutes hearing exactly what you suspected. The best outcome is you save yourself a regret cut and a $300 fix.

Is the consultation actually free?+
Yes. No deposit, no booking fee, no obligation to book a service. The free consult is 15 minutes in-studio or a 10-minute phone call. We map a plan, give you a cost estimate, and you decide if you want to book.
Can I do the consultation and the service in the same visit?+
For simpler services like trims and men's cuts, yes — we can usually consult and execute in the same appointment slot. For complex color or color correction, the consultation needs to happen separately so we can order any specialized product or block enough chair time for the actual service.
What if I am embarrassed about my previous color?+
Do not be. About a third of consultations are for clients with previous color outcomes that did not land — box dye gone wrong, banded balayage, brassy highlights, faded vivids. We see it weekly. No judgment, just a plan to fix it.
